DeNA's Baseball Buy-in of Yokohama BayStars Officially Approved

Japanese social gaming giant DeNA (TYO:2432) just issued a statement announcing that the Nippon Professonal Baseball Organization (NPB) has officially approved its planned acquisition of a 66.92 percent majority stake in the Yokohama BayStars.

Earlier in the month the company had announced its intent to buy into the baseball team, and now that it has NPB approval (as well as the signature of the other shareholders) we can now — in our best baseball jargon — say they’ve rounded third and are headed for home, with the acquisition to be made tomorrow. For everyone’s benefit, I’ll skip the second base metaphors…

The team will be renamed the Yokohama DeNA BayStars, and the company hopes that in addition to contributing to the local baseball scene that it can enhance the DeNA brand inside of Japan with the purchase, which amounts to 6.5 billion yen (or about $84 million).
