Yahoo India Partners With Dinamalar, Launches Tamil News Site

yahoo-DinamalarYahoo India announced on Thursday a partnership with Dinamalar to launch a co-branded Tamil news site in India. The content site will be co-branded as seen in the screen capture on the right.

The announcement claims that the Yahoo! India network reaches over 80 percent of all Indian internet users, citing a Comscore report from May. This partnership effort with Dinamalar will help Yahoo maintain its lead as one of the largest content providers in India.

Yahoo has had a lot of partnerships with content providers but a co-branded news site is certainly something out of the norm. In my opinion, it is a huge deal for Dinamalar as it leverages on Yahoo’s wide reach.

Adimoolam Lakshmipathy, Director at Dinamalar said in the statement:

“Our partnership with Yahoo! will increase the reach and availability of our premium content. It will also help us to connect with Tamil audiences across the globe.”

Apparently more companies are looking to localize their services to engage Indian users better. Last month, Google included five local Indian languages to Google Translate for India, namely Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu.

Like China, India is now experiencing huge growth in its Internet and tech industry. Vijay Anand, founder of the Startup Centre in India, recently told us that more Indians are now returning from the U.S to start their own ventures at home. Among the most notable Indian start-up successes are DeskAway and FusionCharts.
