Xiaomi ends Singles Day as Tmall’s top vendor, but it can’t beat last year’s record

Xiaomi-Mi-Note-Pro

Although we don’t have a total number for the entire country yet, it seems certain that yesterday was the biggest online shopping day in the history of the world. (If that sounds hyperbolic, go read about how much Alibaba sold). But what were people actually buying? Xiaomi stuff, apparently.

Of course, people buy tons of things on Singles Day. But the Chinese smart hardware startup has announced that Xiaomi was the number one overall vendor on Alibaba’s Tmall platform for the third year straight. And it wasn’t just Alibaba users trying to get their hands on Xiaomi – the company was the top smartphone brand on JD and Suning’s platforms during Singles Day, too.

After kicking off the day of sales by selling US$63 million in just 90 minutes, Xiaomi’s sales pace slowed considerably. The company ended just under the US$200 million mark when all was said and done, with a final sales total of RMB 1.25 billion (US$196 million). That’s well under the US$254 million it hit during last year’s Singles Day, which suggests that even the world’s biggest shopping holiday couldn’t rescue Xiaomi from its slowing sales growth this year.

The company didn’t reveal how many smartphones it sold, but it did say that it sold 66,000 smart TVs (better than last year) and 81,000 of its set-top boxes. The Mi Band (which isn’t actually a Xiaomi product, but is part of the Xiaomi smart ecosystem) also did well, selling over 100,000 units.

Do you think this counts as a good Singles Day for Xiaomi?
