Maia Care originally launched as an AI transcription tool for doctors. The team quickly discovered that emergency medical services presented a more urgent challenge.

Ambulance crews operate in, fast-moving environments. They often document patient encounters from memory between calls. This leads to incomplete reports that derail medical handovers and financial reimbursement.

😟 Problem

EMS agencies are under growing financial pressure. Call volumes have increased by 16%, while the number of transport vehicles has grown by only 1%.

Accurate documentation is essential for reimbursement. However, manual reviews cannot scale across every patient encounter, leaving 8% to 10% of claims unpaid and 25% underpaid.

Most documentation is still reviewed after patient encounters are complete, leaving little opportunity to correct missing information before claims are submitted.

💡 Solution

The platform optimizes reporting and revenue for emergency medical services through a four-layer workflow:

  • Capture: Records audio, dispatch information, electronic patient care records (ePCR), and device data.
  • AI Reports and QA: Automatically populates ePCRs and identifies documentation gaps before billing.
  • Protocol Adherence: Provides frontline responders with real-time cues to align with clinical standards (planned).
  • Billing: Flags denial risks, identifies underpayments, and automatically codes claims.

📊 Market size

The startup targets a US$21 billion total addressable market within the US ambulance services sector.

Its serviceable addressable market is the US$12 billion US claim-bearing ambulance revenue segment.

Maia Care estimates its serviceable obtainable market at US$100 million in annual recurring revenue, based on 118 agencies with an average annual contract value of around US$846,000.
