Gone are the days when business spending was viewed as a routine administrative task. Today, rising costs, tightening margins, and the complexities of cross-border operations are forcing SMEs to double down on cost discipline and see business spending as a strategic lever for growth.

“Business spending today looks very different from just a few years ago and has evolved into a model that is increasingly digital-first, subscription-based, and inherently cross-border,” says Tan Min Yeow, head of Singapore cards and payments at United Overseas Bank (UOB).

Foreign exchange (FX) spending by UOB’s business customers has grown by 5% year on year in the first quarter of 2026. This was largely driven by payments to global platforms like Meta and Adobe, as well as an 84% surge in spending on emerging AI tools.

As digitalization opens up new avenues of buying and selling abroad, working with international talent and vendors, as well as implementing new payment methods, will require more focus and prioritization.

Navigating the landscape

Rising digitalization certainly comes with challenges.

For one, it is becoming increasingly complex for SMEs and startups to manage their expenses with clarity and control. As businesses scale, expenses quickly become fragmented across cards, bank transfers, and multiple digital tools, making it difficult to maintain a single, real-time view.

The shift to subscription-based services further adds to the complexity. Businesses are often paying for multiple tools, some of which may overlap or go underutilized. Coupled with tighter cash flow, this creates a need for better oversight.

These issues have created greater demand for a more streamlined, data-driven approach to finance where less time is spent on manual processes and more on driving growth and making informed decisions.

Leveraging the right tools

However, adopting a data-driven approach to finance requires the right structure and tools. For SMEs, selecting the best business card is not just about rewards. Business owners also have to consider cash flow sensitivity, inflationary pressures, foreign transaction fees, and how easily spending can be tracked across the organization.

Without the right systems in place, businesses may struggle to get a clear view of where money is going and how each expense affects cash flow.

UOB designed its Business World Debit Card for SMEs to help bridge this gap, enabling businesses to have greater control and visibility over their spendings.

“The UOB Business World Debit Card embeds savings such as cash rebate and no FX fees into everyday transactions and linking spend directly to available funds, without adding complexity,” shares Tan.

A debit card allows businesses to spend only from available funds in their account, providing a straightforward way to manage business expenses while maintaining visibility of available cash balances.

Offering up to 1.5% cash rebate on local spend, the card allows businesses to accrue savings that compound over time, freeing up capital that can be reallocated into growth initiatives. A card with 0% foreign currency administrative fees also helps businesses reduce costs when transacting internationally.

SMEs that use the UOB Business World Debit Card alongside the UOB eBusiness Account, which is targeted at emerging companies, can gain a more consolidated view of their cash flow and expenses. This helps business owners maintain better oversight and make more informed decisions as their operations grow.

Unlocking growth

As SMEs and startups scale, their business spend becomes far more complex, as do their broader needs.

Beyond core offerings like the UOB Business World Debit Card and eBusiness Account, UOB also supports SMEs through wider capability-building initiatives. This includes UOB BizSmart, an ecosystem of partners offering digital solutions across areas such as accounting, HR and payroll, payments, cybersecurity, business essentials, and artificial intelligence. SMEs can also link selected solutions to their UOB business account, helping them gain a clearer view of their finances and improve day-to-day oversight.

This is complemented by the UOB SME app, which gives businesses access to an interactive dashboard for real-time cash flow visibility, preferential FX rates, currency watchlists, market insights, and networking opportunities.

As SMEs become more digital and internationally connected, financial tools are evolving beyond convenience to become part of how businesses manage costs, cash flow, and operational efficiency. Through digital programs and tools such as UOB BizSmart and the UOB SME app, businesses can access integrated digital solutions, real-time financial insights, and industry networks that support day-to-day operations while laying the foundation for sustainable growth.

In an increasingly complex business environment, optimized financial management, with the right banking partner, can help companies build resilience and agility to scale with confidence.

UOB’s commitment to SME growth has earned global recognition, including being named the World’s Best Bank for SMEs by The Digital Banker and Best SME Bank in Asia Pacific by The Asian Banker in 2026. These accolades reinforce UOB’s strength as the “One Bank for ASEAN”, connecting businesses of all sizes to opportunities across the region and beyond.
