What is Foursquare?

foursquare_logoWhenever my friends ask me about Foursquare, I would describe it as a location-based mobile game cum social networking platform.

To participate in the game, all users have to do is to check-in their current location, be it a shopping mall or a nearby petrol station!

While Twitter and Facebook are asking, “What’s happening?” and “What’s on your mind?”, Foursquare is asking, “Where are you?”.

The number of game points you receive depends heavily on the type of check-in you make (first time visit, first check-in of the day, overseas etc)

If you meet certain criteria, you will get to unlock different ego-boosting badges.

Foursquare tips

The social part of the game allows you to know your friends’ whereabouts.

You might be thinking, “why would I care about where they are? I am not a stalker!”

Well, how many times do you catch yourself asking your friends where they have been?

A tweet or an update might be able to tell you the same thing, but it is apparent that Foursquare does it better since it’s much more focused. Not only can you see where your friends are, you can also view tips that are related to that location – what’s hot and what’s not.
