Indonesian Artist Kidnapped, Becomes Trending Topic on Twitter

Since Wednesday morning, the topic “Vokalis Band Vierra Diculik” (Vierra Band Vocalist Kidnapped in Indonesian) was on the top of Twitter’s trending topics. It was not only trending in Indonesia alone, but it also became a trending topic across the world for eight hours.

This trending topic was triggered when 21 year old celebrity, Widy Soediro Nichlany, the main vocalist of Indonesian band Vierra was reported kidnapped on Wednesday morning. Social media analytics company, Salingsilang captured this phenomenon today afternoon, when there was still no clarity about the case. Keywords like “Vierra kidnapped” and “Widi Vierra” top the highest trend, when Twitter users try to search and tweet regarding this kidnapping case.

Widy-related tweets reached its peak when Vierra’s management and record label held a press conference to address to Widy’s widespread news on her unfortunate kidnap.

Volume of the tweets was so huge that “Vokalis Band Vierra Diculik” overtook popular trends like #nationalkissingday worldwide and #bieberfeverforever from Justin Bieber fans in Indonesia.

This case raises immediate reaction from not only Vierra’s fans, but also from other local celebrities and record companies that support Widy. The trending topic was also the center of discussions as many people observe Widy‘s official Twitter account where she updated her status on Tuesday night while she was at a cafe in downtown Jakarta. That also happened to be her latest update after the Twitter outcry.

Widy indeed appears to have been kidnapped by three men at 4 am this morning, but managed to escape and had medical check at the hospital as she reported the case of kidnapping and sexual harassment to the police. Indonesians on Twitter heaved a sigh of relief.
