Org Chart: The people bringing Traveloka to life

Charts and visuals, only for subscribers

Org Chart maps out the people at the top of Asia’s most prominent tech companies. Who are the key decision-makers? How are the teams organized? What does it tell us about the company’s priorities? We continue this series with Indonesian traveltech unicorn Traveloka.

A pioneer in travel ecommerce, Traveloka has influenced the way many Indonesians – and others across the Asia Pacific – book flight tickets. The company also set the path for other similar platforms today.

The online travel agent was founded in 2012 by Ferry Unardi, Albert Zhang, and Derianto Kusuma. However, at the end of 2018, Kusuma – who was also the firm’s CTO – left due to a clash of visions amid the changing tech landscape.

Indeed, the company has evolved from a metasearch engine for flight tickets. Traveloka now calls itself a “lifestyle super app.”

It manages at least 20 products and services under three main business pillars, namely travel, local services, and financial services. Travel refers to flight, train, and bus ticket booking services, while local services cover recreational and other activities that are limited to certain areas. Its fintech products include Traveloka PayLater.

Some services, primarily those launched during the pandemic, have been terminated. These include e-grocery, food delivery, and end-to-end logistics services.

According to Tech in Asia’s database, Traveloka has raised at least US$1.47 billion across eight rounds of funding. It became a unicorn in June 2017 and it was valued at US$2.7 billion as of July 2020.

Unlike Southeast Asia’s other tech heavyweights, Traveloka is still a private company. In 2021, its plan to go public via the SPAC route in the US failed. It’s unclear whether an IPO is still in the cards as travel recovers in the post-pandemic era.

Here are a few more observations:

  • Each business line has its own lead: Traveloka’s financial services are under Willy Sakareza’s and Doan Lingga’s leadership, while its transport vertical is helmed by Iko Putera.
  • Ray Frederick Djajadinata has filled in the CTO position since 2020.
  • Executive board member Henry Hendrawan left the company in March 2022 to form an edtech startup called Pintarnya together with another former Traveloka executive, Nelly Nurmalasari.
  • Some of its key appointments include Joydeep Chakraborty, former head of technology, media, and telecommunications for UBS Southeast Asia. Chakraboty has been Traveloka’s chief strategy and investment officer since 2019.
  • Hendrik Susanto, ex-CEO of asset management firm Ancora Capital Management, has been Traveloka’s chief investment officer since 2017.
  • In March 2022, Shirley Lesmana, who served as vice president of brand strategy and marketing, was promoted to chief marketing officer (CMO).
  • The CMO position was once held by Dannis Muhammad for eight years before he became the chief global innovation officer in 2020 and left his post in the same year.
