Viki Teams Up with Axis for Mobile Video in Indonesia

Viki, the social startup that shows videos, music, TV dramas, and music concerts around the world for free has announced that it has partnered with Indonesian telco Axis to reach 17 million Axis customers in the country. The popular video site, which has been translated into more than 150 languages, now can be reached by the the mobiles telco’s customers on their phones via the Viki apps for Android, iOS, or on the Axis ‘NET’ site.
The leading international video site says it has over one billion videos and around 200 million words translated in the form of subtitles. Daniel Horan, chief marketing officer of Axis, adds:
Customers can now watch a fantastic range of TV programs, music videos, and concerts from over 20 countries like Korea, Japan, the US, the UK, all with Bahasa [Indonesia] subtitles and all for free. Most importantly, from their mobile anywhere, any time. It’s really simple.
The Viki app will also remember where you left off when you stopped watching the video, which is quite useful.
For this promotion, Axis users are able to watch Korean music videos by B.A.P, Girl’s Day, and K.Will as well as the latest Viki content such as the MBC Music Festival and MTV Wonder Girls. Axis customers also have a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy SIII courtesy of Viki.
This is a natural expansion for the Singapore-based startup (it has offices in San Francisco and Seoul as well) since Indonesia is becoming more mobile and is also spending more money on mobile data. Plus, the country contains many avid followers of Japanese anime and Korean dramas, so that content is sure to be popular. With investment from big names like Andreessen Horowitz and Greylock, it will be interesting to see how Viki will sustain its already impressive growth.
