Hi there,
During the first Covid-19 lockdown in Manila, farmers posted on social media trying to find buyers for their crops. After all, their usual customers – restaurants – were closed.
Households pitched in to buy a portion of their goods, exemplifying the spirit of bayanihan, a Filipino term for volunteering to achieve a goal for the good of the community. It was enough to help some of these businesses survive.
Those were the days. There are hardly any posts seeking such help now, but food waste still persists. That’s why this week’s Big Story, TreeDots sees strong 2023 revenue growth powering into 2024, is such good news for me. The Singapore-based startup connects suppliers that have excess or imperfect food to businesses who are willing to buy them at lower prices.
TreeDots’ CEO says he’s expecting 50% to 60% revenue growth for 2024. Here’s hoping the company sees a Philippine expansion as a worthwhile venture.
Speaking of companies not letting anything go to waste, Apple is making unprecedented moves in China to revive its fading luster in the world’s biggest market. The company is partnering with Alibaba so it can start selling iPhone 16s equipped with the full suite of features of Apple Intelligence.
