It looks like the rumors were true. Riot has confirmed on the official League of Legends site that Vel’Koz, the Eye of the Void, is the latest addition to the game’s stable of champions. From the site:
The Void is preparing to spill forth its latest monstrosity: Vel’Koz. A terrifying being created for the sole purpose of learning, Vel’Koz absorbs knowledge and accrues understanding through a multitude of tests and scans. Unfortunately, those very tests, while extremely productive for Vel’Koz, have a tendency to utterly destroy his subjects.
Riot says Vel’Koz is played best in the mid lane, as he’s powerful but not particularly fast. He’s also pretty squishy, which means you’ll want to keep to the back during teamfights and be sure the enemy’s more powerful champions are kept at a distance. For a full rundown of Vel’Koz’s abilities, check the official site.

One detail Riot hasn’t revealed, though, is when the Eye of the Void will be available. Vel’Koz is not currently available in the game’s champion shop, but with his release finally officially confirmed, I’d guess it won’t be too long before you can float around as a giant eye in-game, blasting your enemies.
