Australian gov’t to hold talks with Zuckerberg over Facebook’s content block

“Australia will hold talks with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a bid to break a legal standoff after the tech giant angered the government by blocking the nation’s news sharing on its platform,” reported Bloomberg.

Details:

  • In an interview on Friday, Australia’s Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said he will talk to Zuckerberg later in the day.
  • However, Frydenberg also said that the government will proceed with its legislation, which requires Facebook and Google to reach commercial deals with Australian publishers and pay them for news content. The law is expected to pass parliament next week.

Context:

  • Facebook has barred Australians from finding or sharing news on its platform in retaliation against the government’s proposed legislation, which it put forward last year due to lost advertising revenue.
  • According to Frydenberg, Google and Facebook collectively take up US$7 billion of the online advertising market in the country.
