Twitter Adds Japan, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur as Trend Locations

Good news in Asia as Twitter adds 70 more trend locations including Japan, Philippines, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. They are now live on Twitter.

If you click on each country, you could see more trend location cities such as Mumbai, Tokyo and Sydney. Here’s the list in Asia as a whole:

  • Tokyo – Japan
  • Bandung and Jakarta – Indonesia
  • Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia
  • Mumbai – India
  • Philippines
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Sydney – Australia
  • New Zealand

Twitter’s trend locations are popular among users to find out what’s happening in the local scene. The popularity of trend locations and users’ willingness to share their location information could have inspired Twitter to look into location-based advertising. In fact, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone did mention that location-based advertising is one area that has great potential in the microblog.

Local trends make Twitter more localized and relevant to users. The Worldwide trend is usually dominated by U.S related topics because of its large user base. With local trends, users can now find out ‘what’s happening’ in a defined location, which could be useful for local businesses. Local businesses would have an easier time riding on local trends compared to getting on the worldwide trend list. It makes word-of-mouth campaign on Twitter more targeted too.
