The clock strikes twelve (again) and today is officially the first day of Chinese New Year.
What surprises me is that “Kung Hei Fat Choi”, a Cantonese phrase to wish people prosperity, is currently now a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.
Interestingly, Chinese aren’t the only one celebrating Chinese New Year on Twitter. We’re witnessing a diversity of races tweeting this phrase to trending topic at the point of writing.
One Twitter user said, “To everyone in the Chinese communtiy, Kiong Hee Huat Tsai! Kung Hei Fat Choi! Gong Xi Fa Cai! :)”.
Another Twitter user @Choi_Yoori tweeted, “Kung Hei Fat Choi! Kekeke. So Cantonese version is trending now eh…”
Twitter’s top tweet suggests that @Lizzzuy, with over 150,000 followers could be the originator of the trend. Other influential Twitter users like @alexander_0729 and @flyPAL have also helped to spread the Chinese New Year Cantonese greeting across Twitterverse.

For the fun of it, we’re also helping to spread the message and wishing you a happy and prosperous Chinese New Year. Kung Hei Fat Choi!
