Infocomm Investments Joins Twilio Recent Funding Round

twilio

Twilio is a US-based startup that specializes in providing cloud communications to clients, such as call automation, tracking, SMS — all without the hassle of maintaining any hardware.

Ostensibly, Twilio does have plans to expand to Asia. Lim Kuoyi, the head of Infocomm Investments, announced in a blog post yesterday that the fund has invested in Twilio, together with Bessemer Venture Partners, Union Square Ventures, and 500 Startups. I shot an email to Kuoyi who told me that there aren’t any specific plans for Twilio in Asia that they can share yet. But Kuoyi did say the Infocomm Investment is the first non-U.S investor to participate in Twilio’s funding round. He wrote in this blog entry:

[Twilio] has experienced tremendous growth, counting more than 100,000 developers in its community and expanding into Europe. We see great growth potential for Twilio in Asia, with Singapore a natural base for its Asian entry. We are excited to be working with Jeff Lawson and team in carrying its momentum over.

Some might recall Hoiio, a Singapore startup offering similar services as Twilio. It’s not game over yet. Fight to the death, Hoiio — or maybe just get acquired by Twilio somehow! Hoiio has local knowledge and know-how. But so does Infocomm Investment who is now the caretaker of Twilio in Asia.

Fun stuff.
