Huawei Launches Number Portability in India, Still Struggles With Stigma

huawei-indiaIn cooperation with Idea Cellular, Chinese company Huawei has launched “the first commercial MNP solution in India,” allowing Idea to provide a number portability service to more than 63 million subscribers in 22 circles, according to a report by The Hindu.

Huawei regional vice-president A. Sethuraman explained:

Our STP-based MNP solution can enable operators to simplify their signaling and routing by using a flexible configuration of the signaling message processing.

Huawei also made news in India this week when it was appointed to inspect India’s imported smartphones for spyware, despite widespread concerns over the company’s connections with the Chinese military. Fast Company covered the issue in a feature article yesterday.

Huawei is trying to build up its corporate reputation around the world, but is seeing resistance not only in India, but also in the US and Britain. For its part, the company just released its annual corporate social responsibility report for 2010 (see below), in an effort to highlight some of the good things it is doing around the globe.
