Sina Weibo Powered by Nokia’s Qt [VIDEO]

sina-weibo-qtWe’ve stumbled upon a fascinating video on YouTube, which tells the tale of how Sina’s developers have built its Sina Weibo smartphone app for Symbian and Meego using Nokia’s Qt Software Development Kit (SDK).

This video is filmed very much like a marketing video to promote Nokia’s Qt SDK, but nonetheless it paints a very interesting picture of the relationship between Nokia and Sina. After all, Nokia is the largest mobile maker in China for now. Its OVI app store also gets the highest volume of mobile app shoppers in the world – especially in China – as compared to its smartphone rivals.

More about Qt from Nokia:

  • Qt SDK combines the Qt framework with tools designed to streamline the creation of applications for Symbian and Maemo, MeeGo (Nokia N9) in addition to desktop platforms, such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
  • Qt framework – intuitive APIs for C++ and CSS/JavaScript-like programming with Qt Quick for rapid UI creation
  • Qt Creator IDE – powerful cross-platform integrated development environment, including UI designer tools and on-device debugging
  • Tools and toolchains – All you need: simulator, local and remote compilers, internationalization support, device toolchains and more.

The video features Ding Chen, product manager at Sina; GaoFei Wang, vice president at Sina; and Allen Chan, senior engineer at Accenture, who all share their thoughts about the new version of Sina’s Weibo application that was built in Qt, running on a Nokia N9.

As Allen explains in the video, the app took only four developers about two months to complete, a process hastened by the Qt Quick components. It’s pretty slick.
