TI4: VG reigns supreme, DK, iG, and EG tied for second

Struggles and surprises continue on the third day of The International 2014 (TI4) with three Chinese teams now leading the group. Yesterday’s top team, Cloud 9 (C9), has fallen to the middle eight with a record of 5-4. Vici Gaming (VG) now stands atop the group with a record of 7-1, followed by Invictus Gaming (iG), Team DK, and American team Evil Geniuses (EG), each with a standing of 6-3.

The previous champions of the International, Natus Vincere (Na’Vi) of The International 2011 (TI1) and The Alliance of The International 2013 (TI3), are both part of the middle eight, although the latter is still struggling to climb out of the bottom six. It still shares its spot with Fnatic and Na’Vi.US with a standing of 4-5.

Teams have played eight games each, at least half of the total games for the group stage, and it’s becoming clear that Asia has a better shot of reclaiming the Aegis as compared to last year’s performance. Whether or not the teams are still hiding pocket strategies is debatable, but many are fighting to stay in the tournament. The tournament’s new format will eliminate the bottom six teams from the group stages. If we’re looking at pocket strategies coming out, it’s probably going to come from those who are struggling to get out of, or not get into the bottom six.

More information on the new format can be found here. You can also check out more of our TI4 coverage here.
