Two Tencent execs earned $200m each in 2021

Tencent handed out more than US$200 million each to two unnamed executives last year after it cut compensation for founder Pony Ma, Bloomberg reported.

According to the company’s annual report, the two people are not directors nor high-level executives. While Tencent kept the names of the top earners undisclosed, WeChat founder Allen Zhang and gaming business chief Mark Ren are among their ranks.

Meanwhile, Ma – who also serves as Tencent’s CEO – was compensated for almost US$7 million in 2021, which was 25% lower than the previous year. Martin Lau, the company’s president, took home about US$50.8 million last year.

The development follows Tencent registering an 8% bump in its revenue for the fourth quarter of 2021 to log US$22.6 billion, its slowest topline growth since its 2004 financial debut. Meanwhile, its operating profit for the quarter saw a 72% lift to US$17.2 billion.
