Ramadan is almost over and Eid is coming in few days. Many Indonesians who live in urban areas are preparing for their travel back to hometowns. Most people use buses, trains, cars, and motorcycles for the journey, so they don’t have to worry about cellular coverage during their travel. But the situation is quite different for those who travel by sea. Luckily, Telkomsel now guarantees network coverage aboard ships.
The company put several devices such as parabolic antennas, VSAT IP modems, pico BTS, and solar cells or automatic power backup batteries on board 15 ships to ensure cellular coverage for travelers at sea. As Telkomsel vice president for Papua-Maluku-Sulawesi-Kalimantan area Agus Mulyadi said to Okezone
To enable passengers communication via mobile phone during their journey at sea, we have implemented IP-based technology through the Telkomsel Merah Putih program
This is a helpful innovation for people who travel by the sea. Now, they can use their mobile phones onboard ships during their journey to hometowns, something that was nearly impossible to do before. In addition to making phone calls and sending SMS along the journey, the service enables them to be actively involved in or sharing their experience on Twitter. And considering Indonesia as a mobile-centric nation, the innovation will likely to boost Telkomsel’s customers after the Eid celebration.
