Cheryl Yeoh recently wrote about giving back and mentoring here on TIA and that piece resonated with me for quite a bit, especially on the traction mentor part – entrepreneurs who are just one or two steps ahead of you.
I think the general consensus is that a mentor isn’t someone you officially announce or sign a partnership contract with for the next decade or so. A mentor also isn’t necessarily someone older than you. A mentor can be as simple as your manager at work, your professor in school or even, your brother.
I was brought up in a big family and my parents are more hands-off than hands-on. My elder sister essentially became my traction mentor. She is definitely a few steps ahead simply by the fact that she’s 3 years older than me. What’s more important was she taught me to do something I love – afterall life is about maximizing happiness. She showed an example by starting her own clothing line, recruited a technical co-founder to build an app for it, and manage to recently get a few angels to fund her project.
