What it’s like running 2 startups as a solo founder

Very often, you hear that VCs don’t prefer companies with solo founders. So, a solo founder running two companies would be a big no! Even most entrepreneurs don’t recommend it for very valid reasons.

But that’s what I ended up doing.

I lead two growing companies, Dreamwares (a service provider in the CRM space) and CompanyHub (a CRM system).

We are not funded, and I don’t have a co-founder. Yet, we are growing. So, I thought of sharing my learnings.

1. Delegation

Initially, I was highly involved in almost every process. This meant that my absence really affected the company.

Luckily, I came across Richard Branson’s books and learned the importance of delegation.

I also started talking to people. One of my uncles who used to work with an MNC shared his secret:

β€œI tell my team, β€˜You are free to make decisions. If it works well, the credit goes to you. If anything goes wrong, say that it was your decision.’”

This was a really powerful thought. Empower your employees. Give them ownership. In turn, they will give their best and not let you down.

When you have the best people who treat the company as their own, why do you need a co-founder?

I started following this, and it really worked. My employees treated the company like their own and worked hard to make it successful. I also found that many of them were very smart and often had better ideas than me.

When you have the best people who treat the company as their own, why do you need a co-founder?

If you take away only one point from this article, it has to be this: delegation is the key to scaling your business.
