In many non-tech circles, people still don’t completely understand what blockchain and cryptocurrencies are. It’s come to a point where people are resorting to bizarre methods to teach others about the tech (see Japan’s new cryptocurrency girl band and a “cryptocollectable” game with illustrated cats).
Despite this, blockchain enthusiasts are proclaiming its impending rule. So, what will it take for blockchain to become mainstream and will this happen in 2018?
Some blockchain voices weigh in.

What are the driving forces for blockchain? Bitcoin. Or more accurately, cryptocurrencies and the profits derived from them. As much as I would love to say “the technology,” “disruption,” or “innovation” (and don’t get me wrong, there are many striving to solve problems with blockchain), the focus is on crypto.
People in the space are profiting. The return of initial investment is so lucrative that everyone is talking about bitcoin. Even traditional bankers are moving into crypto trading.
It’s a bit disappointing that the focus is on “getting rich,” but as a fan of the fundamental technology, whatever keeps public interest and gets people onboard, I’m all for it.
What might be preventing blockchain from becoming mainstream?
- There are currently no consumer facing success cases of any technology, product, or service built on the blockchain hitting critical mass.
- It’s too nerdy for non-technical people to understand.
- The focus is too much on bitcoin, and bitcoin is just one representative of the blockchain and crypto economy.
