CISCO predicted that in 2019 there will be 3.9 billion global internet users, which is 51% of the world population. Reacting to this prediction, every company becomes digital company, from bookstore, music, car, and hotels. Most likely, 40% companies won’t exist in the next 10 years if they do not digitally transformed.
Hence, government, now will also have to go digital in order to fit with their citizen modernization. What are the similarity between Tesco, google, eBay, Yahoo, McDonald, and Amazon? Can you see the similarity? Not on the surface, but inside the companies, these companies have their CDO (Chief Digitization Officer). Well, digitization has changed business way. In 2015, digitization is also one of the top 10 tech-strategies.
Digital business is overarching. You can connect everything with endless opportunities with digitization. According to CISCO Visual Network 2015 index, in 2019 there will be 24.4 billion devices with IP address connected to the internet. But, 40% of those data will come from sensors as more and more wearable devices developed (they can send real-time heart rate, such as images from cameras and blood pressures).
Because of this big data issues that we face today, government in Indonesia made http://data.go.id/. In this website, you can find lots of data you can play with. By the time this article is written, there are 1.002 datasets from Jakarta local government, Bandung local government, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment, Indonesian Bank, and Indonesian statistic centers. The entire data set in that portal is categorized as public domain.
To cultivate the data, Bandung government has launched Open Data Challenge in early 2015. Bandung’s aim to be a smart city is not overrated as Bandung have many creative talents to create mobile applications, websites, or integrated digital service. Within this year, there are hundreds of apps support Bandung smart city, ranging from tourism, flood detection, to smart governance. There are still lots of opportunities to exploit with the current data. Starting from Bandung, perhaps other Indonesian major cities can follow the initiative.
Internet of Everything (IoE) is everywhere now it’s accelerating. The cost of a single chip with 2 million transistors is getting cheaper and smaller, like $1. You may embed it in building, clothes, door, etc. In the near future, it is not again about cloud computing but fog computing. If the data canter if the cloud, then the fog is bridging it with devices. This Fog computing is lower than the cloud and handle intermediate data.
With this digital effect, Indonesia should be able to build an ecosystem of innovation. With the Indonesia open data that is easily searched, accessed, and used, innovative solutions for a better Indonesia can be achieved.
Indonesian government has provided us with this open data. Now, it is time to calling Indonesian startups to explore this Indonesian open data!
