Startup Weekend Jakarta Finds 3 Winners Looking to Disrupt the Market

Startup Weekend Jakarta

As proven by the Startup Weekend Jakarta event held yesterday, it seems like there’s no such thing as a bad day to build your startup. Having already looked at 12 of the ideas worth noting from the event, and after a grueling few days of product development, three of the startup teams emerged as winners. Here are the three:

3rd place: DapurCity

DapurCity wants to be the Airbnb for food by turning any household into a restaurant. This is definitely an interesting idea as it can potentially unlock a whole new market. DailySocial’s Rama Mamuaya – one of the judges – commented that the team should focus on letting home-owners deliver their dishes rather than having total strangers coming into their home.

Fellow judge and Koprol founder Fajar Budiprasetyo expressed his concern that in comparison to Airbnb where an unused room is always available, it is a whole different thing for food. Home-owners cannot always stock up on ingredients in case someone might want to come and pay for their home cooking. A DapurCity representative responded that their focus will be on serious sellers, such as those who put up a banner in front of their place. But if that’s the case, Fajar believes that it’s just going to be another food-spotting app.

Another Indonesian startup opening an online platform for selling home cooking is Sedapur.

2nd: Pulse

Pulse (which will be online later at pulse.co.id) is a bracelet-like hardware device (mock-up picture right) to track your activities online. It has more or less similar functions to other fitness-tracking products like the NikeFuel and JawBone Up.

The difference lies in affordability and openness. While the NikeFuel costs $150, and the JawBone Up is sold at $130, the Pulse team is pushing its product price to as low as $30. It will also have an open API.

Fajar concedes that the idea isn’t new, but says the product already has a market, and it’s quite obvious what the team can offer – such as online gamification, and potential white labelling the hardware for sporting brands.
