Grab co-founder Tan Hooi Ling is set to step down from her operations roles at Grab by the end of this year. Moving forward, she will take on an advisory role at the Singapore-based tech giant.
Tan Hooi Ling established Grab in 2012 alongside group CEO and co-founder Anthony Tan. They came up with the idea for Grab in 2011, while they were classmates at Harvard Business School.
Tan Hooi Ling has been with Grab from the beginning, only leaving the company for some stints in the US before rejoining in 2015.
She held the COO role until the appointment of Alex Hungate announced in January 2022.
As co-founder and director at Grab, Tan Hooi Ling oversees its corporate strategy, technology, user experience and people operations. However, most of the regional profit and loss leaders report to Hungate, as indicated in the latest Grab organization chart
Tan Hooi Ling will also be relinquishing her seat on Grab’s board, where she has been a member since the firm’s December 2021 listing.
The nominating committee of Grab’s board will be reviewing potential candidates to fill her spot. It is also expected to make announcements about further changes to the board.
“People who know me well know that I am an adventurer at heart, and there are many other personal passions that I have put aside to build Grab with Anthony,” Tan Hooi Ling said in a statement. “I believe now is the right time for me to pass on the baton to our next generation of leaders, and to pursue these other passions.”
For the first quarter of 2023, Grab posted a revenue jump of 130% year on year at US$525 million. The company is targeting profitability by Q4 this year.
