200 Developers Made 32 Applications at Startup Asia Jakarta Hackathon

Startup Asia Jakarta 2012 was different compared to our Startup Asia Singapore, especially as we hosted a Hackathon this time. The 24-hour event had around 200 developers in attendance, and 32 Android applications emerged when the dust had settled.

We had developers coming from Depok, Bandung, Jogjakarta, and even Malang all the way to Jakarta. The hackathon took place at the same venue as Startup Asia Jakarta 2012, but since it was held in another room, it didn’t quite get the spotlight it deserved, with participants working all night long and sleeping on floors hacking at their apps.

The hackathon started with a brief introduction from Tech in Asia, and then continued with presentation from 7langit, CloudyRec, Urbanesia, and SkySQL. After the session, participants were then given the green light to start hacking until 10:30 am the next day. From the start until the end, all of them looked really enthusiastic and some even didn’t sleep until 4am in the morning to finish their app.

All the applications were given three minutes pitching time in front of the judges at the end of the hacking session to decide the three winners. The judges were Erwan Mace of Google, Aung Sithu Kyaw of CloudyRec, and Selina Limman of Urbanesia.

The first winner for the Hackathon session was D’livery – an app that you can use to order foods from your smartphone targeting restaurants and fast food outlets. They can also collect user behavior data and push ads. The app was created by students from Bandung Institute of Technology.

Second place went to JualDisini, a m-commerce application with a slick interface which you can use to sell things via smartphone. One roadblock, however, is that they still haven’t used any payment gateway.

Third place was taken by 123 Rider, an app that will help you tackle traffic in Jakarta by carpooling. Users can just post their destination via smartphone, and say how many passengers that can fit in that car, and then publish to the internet. All of them were also given a pitching time in front of the Startup Asia Jakarta audience after the Startup Arena pitches.

The winners were given some fancy prizes too, as you can see from the list below:

• 1st: $200, new iPad 16GB WiFi, $500 Biznet credits and 1 million IDR Rakuten voucher
• 2nd: $150, iPod Touch (8 GB), $300 Biznet credits and 500,000 IDR Rakuten voucher
• 3rd: $100, iPod Touch (8 GB), $150 Biznet credits and 300,000 IDR Rakuten voucher
