StartMeUp Hackday – a successful hackathon in Vietnam

Startmeup Hackday (held at SaigonHub a newly opened co-working space in Hochiminh city) is a freestyle hackathon event that targets developers, designers and makers from various backgrounds.

Of the 119 event registrants, 50 hackers showed up on June 8 and 9 to spend 24 sleepless hours to build “something that make Saigoners more productive and happier”-the main theme of this year Hackday event.

About 60% of the participants were third-year-and-above students from local technical universities. The rest of the hackers came from other startups and big tech corporations like KMS or mLab.

The event kicked off with a short introduction from Startmeup’s founder- Mike Tran – and was soon followed by a meticulous sharing session from Tomo Huynh– the founder of Alehap – about his experience from previous hackathons. After that, 16 teams spent the next 24 hours working closely with 14 mentors to materialize their ideas.

Among the 16 final products, 5 are web apps and 11 are mobile-related products. The winning idea of this year event is an iOS and Android app that helps people post and receive notification of real-time traffic jam situations in Saigon. The runner-up takes a more playful angle with an educational color-mixing app that targets children from 3 to 6 years old. Both are highly evaluated by mentors, organizers, Facebook fans, and more than 30 outsiders who attended the Demo session on Sunday.

Some statistics from Hackday:

  • 98.4 l energy drink and 143 l water were consumed.
  • 35 hackers stayed awake for the whole event.
  • The App Demo Album on Facebook reached almost 20,000 viewers in 24 hours after it was posted.
  • 2 non-winning teams were approached by investors right after the event.
