Bollywood is big, and tech firms are rushing in to capitalize on a huge demand for these films.
Singapore-based Viki, for instance, has a wide assortment of subtitled Bollywood films, in addition to content from other countries, available for free on its website and mobile app. Youtube has jumped in as well, launching their own Indian Cinema channel.
Spuul, a recently-formed startup in Singapore, is taking a different approach. Instead of building a catch-all web platform like Youtube or Hulu, it is focused on one thing only: Bollywood movies and television shows.
Their laser-sharp focus makes sense. Why should a small, bootstrapping startup compete with the titans when they can zoom in on an untapped but vast market in India itself and the Indian diaspora around the world?
Currently, they already have about 200 movies on offer, with more on the way. Spuul will eventually have a flat subscription fee of US$4.99 a month, as well as an a la carte fee of US$0.99 for certain films. They are also working on a mobile app that will launch on the iPhone and iPad soon.
The company is started by S. Mohan, a serial entrepreneur that has founded buUuk, Accellion, and more, Sudesh Iyer, the founder of Sony Entertainment TV in India. Michael Smith, the former head of global tech initaitives at Yahoo! Southeast Asia, in involved as well.
They hope to seek investments after validating their concept.
