Report: Jack Ma makes rare appearance at Alibaba’s headquarters

“Alibaba founder Jack Ma, largely out of public view amid a regulatory clampdown on the group, made a rare visit to its Hangzhou campus on Monday during the ecommerce giant’s annual ‘Ali Day’ staff and family event,” Reuters reported.

Details:

  • The star entrepreneur was photographed in an open-air campus shuttle bus with Alibaba executives.
  • Ma most recently surfaced in January this year, when he spoke to a group of teachers. The appearance sent Alibaba’s stock up by over 4%.

Context:

  • Ma has been keeping a low profile since his speech in October last year, where he criticized financial regulators in China.
  • Following his speech last year, Ant Group’s US$37 billion IPO was halted by the market regulator just two days before its listing on the Shanghai exchange.
