Google, Facebook invest in subsea cables to link Singapore to the US

“Facebook is funding two new transpacific subsea cables linking Singapore to the western coast of the US, with Alphabet’s Google also participating in one of the projects, intended to improve internet infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region,” reported Bloomberg.

Details:

  • The firms will partner with local businesses, including Indonesia’s XL Axiata and Singapore-based Keppel, to conduct the project.
  • Google is participating in the Echo subsea cable project, which is expected to be operational in 2023. The company claims the cable will be the first to connect Singapore directly to the US. It will have stops in Indonesia and Guam as it makes its way to California.

Context:

  • Another project called Bifrost would connect Singapore to the US west coast and is expected to be completed in 2024.
  • The development comes after a similar project which links the US to Hong Kong got canceled by the Trump administration in August.
