At 8.30pm today, lights will be switched off around the globe. Yes, on a voluntary basis. But worry not, you are still able to surf the web… maybe just a little dark, though. Naver, Korea’s leading search engine will be hosting a special Earth Hour logo on their homepage as well as switching off lights at its headquarters. Naver’s Twitter-like site, Me2Day, will also be promoting and celebrating Earth Hour with users on a dedicated page.
YouTube came out with customized logo for Earth Hour which is linked to an Earth Hour video channel. The 60 seconds ad below is pretty well crafted, worth a look. “A customized doodle will run across the site for Earth Hour and a light switch will appear on the watch page, allowing users to click and manually darken the page,” said the Earth Hour team.
Baidu, China’s largest search engine will do more than the hour. It has planned to reduce resource consumption by 30 percent in 2011. Even Indonesia’s emerging social recommendation site, Rockto has played a part in promoting Earth Hour. It has introduced an Earth Hour Badge to inspire users to spread the word and take part in Earth Hour.
“Well it’s great to see people around the world showing their support for this good cause. The RockTo team and our users want to be part of Earth Hour. That is why we created this badge to show people that we care & we support this events,” said Errol Widhavian, co-founder of RockTo.
“This is our first time supporting EarthHour and we’re going to do it again next year,” he added
