The 3DS continues to dominate Japanese game charts, with Nintendo’s latest first-party release, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS reportedly pulling in one million in sales during the game’s first weekend in Japan.
This should come as no surprise, as the 3DS is leading the charge of handheld gaming’s conquest of the traditional Japanese game market. Selling over 16 million handhelds since launching the 3DS in domestically in 2011, Nintendo is probably going to be be moving a few extra units after this release. Especially considering the number of reported cases of people having already broken their 3DS slide pads playing the game.

Expect a strong showing when the game is released in other regions as well, as in some cases people were shelling out nearly the price of the game for access to the demo one week early.
If Smash Bros. fever continues, it may even help the struggling Wii U, which though outpacing the Playstation 4 in Japan, has been raining on the Kyoto-based company’s profit parade since its release in 2012.
