As we found out in our last meetup in Bangkok, running an indie game studio startup is not easy. Since every studio has its own culture and production process, there’s also no one manual you can refer to for a surefire way to success. To that end, we’ve decided to bring together some of the brightest minds in West Malaysia’s game development scene to share their experiences and suggestions on how studios similar to theirs can evolve.

On October 29, hear from Desmond Lee, co-founder of Appxplore, Richard Sun, co-founder of WIGU Games, and Shawn Beck, Velocibox developer, who will share the different paths of growth their companies have taken, as well as the futures they are now working towards.

Appxplore, best known for games like Lightopus and Caveboy Escape, recently got acquired by Fatfish Internet Group. Fatfish now owns a majority stake in the company. WIGU Games was founded and funded as a private entity, but co-founder Sun is looking to expand. Velocibox developer Beck has successfully gotten his solo development effort Greenlit on Steam, and released the game to great acclaim. Hear from them at our meetup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Desmond Lee, CEO of Appxplore

After graduating with a BFA (Computer Arts) in 1999 from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Desmond Lee worked in the United States for five years before returning to Malaysia in 2004. where he worked as a consultant. Lee was later appointed as a consultant and later the producer of the Saladin Animated Series, a flagship of Malaysian 3D animation which was nominated for the International Emmy Awards 2011–Malaysia first Emmy nomination. In 2011, Lee co-founded Appxplore Sdn Bhd, a mobile games development studio based in Kuala Lumpur. Lee is the currently the producer at Appxplore, with the goal to establish a world-class mobile game and content development studio. Appxplore is now one of the leading mobile games development studio in Malaysia.

Richard Sun, CEO of WIGU Games

Driven by his passion for entrepreneurship and gaming, Richard Sun is the founder of WIGU Games. Prior to that, he was a financial analyst who worked in mergers and acquisitions. Now instead of staring at excel sheets of financial data, he looks at spreadsheets filled with XP values and all the goodies that come with game development.

Shawn Beck, developer of Velocibox

Shawn Beck is a Kuala Lumpur-based independent game developer who specializes in creating fast-paced, hard-hitting action games aimed at achieving the ‘flow”.
