Singapore-based ‘clean meat’ maker raises $4.6m in seed funding. Here are the full details

Shiok Meats, a Singapore startup that makes lab-grown shrimp, has raised US$ 4.6 million in seed funding from various investors, announced co-founder and CEO Sandhya Sriram.

The “clean meat” company will use the money for research and development and to hire more engineers. According to a report in Forbes, the company will scale production over the next two to three years, enabling Shiok Meats to deliver its products globally.

The Forbes report also pointed out that shrimp is often peeled by slave laborers. In addition, consumers could risk exposure to food-borne diseases, harmful chemicals, or microplastics.

In contrast, Shiok Meats grows its meat under controlled and clean conditions. The company was founded by Sriram, a stem cell scientist, and Ling Ka Yi, a developmental biologist.

Henry Soesanto, CEO of noodle and biscuit maker Monde Nissin, led the funding round, Sriram told Tech in Asia via email. Startup accelerators Y Combinator and Entrepreneur First also invested participated.
