Hold the Sword Art Online universe in your mobile phone

Slapped inconspicuously onto a backboard at Anime Festival Asia 2013 was a curious advertisement. “Sword Art Online fone,” it read. “Aincrad within your Android Smartphone.”

Sword Art Online fone is a Sword Art Online game that uses the basics of your mobile phone. Installing it transforms your drab Android smartphone into something directly out of Sword Art Online, where you get to pick characters to form a party. You then go on to level them up not by killing monsters, but through use of your phone’s functions. Making a call or sending an email nets your party experience points.

Of course, Sword Art Online fone is a game based on the popular anime Sword Art Online, so it’s only natural it would include combat. You get to battle your way through dungeon levels, though this point we don’t have a lot of detail on that. Leveling up your party gives you access to more party members and more dungeon floors. And of course, there are bosses to conquer.

If you’re a Sword Art Online fan, you can start freaking out now. Sword Art Online fone’s closed beta testing has already begun for Singapore. Along with the USA, we’re one of the first countries to be privy to the international version of Sword Art Online fone.

To register, you simply have to send a blank email to ‘beta[at]saomail.anifone.com’. The full app is expected to launch in December this year, though no specific dates were given to us by publishers LEGS Singapore.

One thing to note before you run off in a fanboyish fever, though: the fine print on the ad notes that the actual characters and equipment playable in the full app will not be available. Still, Sword Art Online fone has an interesting, not-often-seen concept and it is a Sword Art Online game. Give it a go.

UPDATE 11-11-13: According to LEGS Singapore, SAO fone was not playable at Tokyo Game Show as previously noted.
