Singapore aims to be a High-Tech Society

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Singapore is aiming to be a high tech, high performance society, the CNA reported.

At a venture capital firm, Sequoia Capital’s annual retreat, he said that it was because of such an environment in Singapore that has attracted technology giants like Facebook and Groupon to set up offices here.

Facebook is widely popular in Singapore with almost 50 percent of the population using the social network.

Singapore simply loves Facebook and it isn’t hard to pick the country as its sales office in Asia. Groupon entered the market by acquiring Singapore-based group buying site, Beeconomics.

Mr Lee went on to welcome Sequoia Capital’s vision to develop Singapore as one of the innovative and entrepreneurial hub. The government has also put in a lot of effort to promote technology and entrepreneurship within the country. Singapore will also be participating its first SXSW Interactive event this year but the list of participating start-ups isn’t released yet

Asia is a fast rising continent, powered by China, Japan and India. Singapore is also playing her part. Although small in population size, Singapore has given birth to several promising young entrepreneurs and start-ups. Foound is a promising mobile application start-up that has done well at last year DEMO conference while Manga Castle, a recently launched Facebook social game, is attracting 2,700 users each day. Asia looks bright no matter which angle you’re looking at it. As an Asian, I look forward to witness Singapore and Asia’s rise to prominence in the technology and entrepreneurial market.
