Hmlet has announced the launch of a private housing solution catered to local and expat young couples and families in Singapore.

Called Hmlet Nest, the new pet-friendly space will be available in eight conservation shophouses – buildings that serve as both residential and commercial businesses – on Hamilton Road in mid-September and progressively be developed in other buildings that are fully operated by Hmlet.

Hmlet said the shophouses have been completely refurbished to comprise 68 rooms of two-bedroom private units and three- or four-bedroom co-living units. They will also have communal areas that include 5,000 square feet of rooftop space for community activities.

Rooms are priced based on location and size, ranging from S$1,350 (roughly US$1,000) for a room in a co-living unit to S$3,400 (US$2,525) for a two-bedroom private unit.

Additionally, Hmlet said it has formed partnerships with luxury hotels to tap into underutilized hotel rooms. Through this initiative, hotels will be able to leverage the startup’s brand reach in the long-term stay segment. The company also said that Hotel Icon in Hong Kong has already listed its rooms on Hmlet’s website to gain access to a different segment of consumers.

“We’re looking forward to more partnerships with outstanding hotels across the region, especially as these hotels consistently chart high ratings and deliver outstanding hospitality experiences to their customers,” said Dominik Wiesent, managing director at Hmlet Hong Kong.

Through this new business direction, the company is consciously scaling to reach 1,500 rooms by early next year across its three different markets: Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan.

The development comes after Hmlet exited the Australian market, reportedly leaving behind almost US$400,000 in debt and seven head leases.

Currency converted from SG dollar to US dollar: US$1 = S$1.35.
