As my astute colleague Charlie pointed out to me this afternoon, we’ve probably seen more stories related to Valentine’s Day today than any other day this year. So we thought we’d bring you a few of the highlights, including a couple of other notable stories that you might enjoy chewing on along with your assorted chocolates.
1. Valentine’s Day Advice from China: Video Game Marriages Last Longer
Typically the weird games of video game love come from Japan (isn’t the new Love Plus coming out soon?), but this odd report comes courtesy of China. Apparently marriages is the game Long Journey 2 have a lower divorce rate than marriages in most of China’s first tier cities. Let that be a lesson to you. The meat space is for suckers…
2. Angry Birds gives Japan a Valentine’s Day Manga
Angry Birds finally launched on Facebook today, and as soon as you fire up the game it gives you a Valentine’s Day greeting. But Rovio prepared something a little special for Japan, producing a Valentine’s Day manga for Japanese-speaking fans. We hope this is the first of many.
3. Japan Gets ‘Chocolate Phone’ on Valentine’s Day
As we mentioned a few weeks back, today marks the launch of the limited edition Q-pot ‘Chocolate Phone’ in Japan. We first saw this strange handset back at a Docomo event last fall, but by the looks of things some female fans were eagerly waiting for this to finally go on sale.
This is a fun idea. Chinese search engine Baidu is encouraging people to post Valentine’s Day messages on a map, with men in blue and women in pink. Couple’s can post too, but really, who wants to read couple’s messages? So far the map has turned out to be a bit of a sausage-fest, with boys outnumbering girls almost six to one. Easy pickings for the ladies out there!
Bonus: Here’s another fun Valentine’s Day treat for you. Check out who you love on Twitter using Twitamore.com. You might not want to do it while your spouse is in the room though. It raised a very uncomfortable conversation in my house this evening.
And if that doesn’t float your boat, Google’s clever embed of this YouTube Valentine in its homepage today was a nice animated change from its regular fancy drawings. A l’il Tony Bennett never hurt anyone either… Check out the short backstory on it over on TechCrunch.
