Shopee to scale ecommerce venture in Brazil, sources say
The move comes after the online shopping major launched an online store in the country in October 2019 – its first foray outside of Asia. Shopee’s operations in Brazil appeared to be minor then, with its business there only showing the same shops as those on its Asian platforms.
“This is an initiative launched by our cross-border teams as a side project to cater to the demands of their cross-border merchants,” Shopee previously told Tech in Asia in an emailed statement.
According to the report, Shopee is now growing its presence and moving top talent from Southeast Asia to Brazil, the sources said.
The company has also posted several open positions in the South American country, as seen on its LinkedIn page. Its former country managing director for Vietnam, Pine Kyaw, has also been listed as Shopee Brazil country head.
According to one source, Shopee is also looking into other Latin American markets – particularly Mexico – if its Brazilian bet pays off.
