Shingeki No Kyojin Tribute Game review: you get 3DMGs, but no Eren Yaeger

We may still not have any news about a second season of the popular show Shingeki No Kyojin (Attack on Titan), but I do have an actual playable SnK browser game, which is a great way to get over withdrawal from the anime or the manga. The title is also quite easy to remember — Shingeki No Kyojin Tribute Game.

According to the credits, the Shingeki No Kyojin Tribute Game was created by fans named Feng Li and Jiang Li. It is a regular browser game, which will require you to uninstall the Unity plugin to be playable. The title page is rather dull, but it isn’t the superb graphics that make this game worth playing. If you are a fan of the SnK series, one of the things you’ll want to experience is the three-dimensional maneuver gear (3DMG). That is what this makes this game shine.

Gameplay: The 3DMG you’ve always wanted to try

The game has five playable characters — Mikasa Ackerman, Levi, Armin Arlert, Jean Kirschtein, and Marco Bodt. For a tribute game, I’m actually surprised that the show’s protagonist Eren Yeager isn’t one of the playable characters. Although there do not seem to be any statistics that affect game play (such as Mikasa or Levi being geniuses or Armin having a nervous breakdown mid-battle as happens in the anime and manga), each character does have a signature special skill as well as variations in speed.

The creators of the SnK Tribute Game found an interesting way to use the complicated 3DMG from the series. The game allows you to move across the map using one or both of the 3DMG’s hooks. You can hook onto titans, trees or infrastructure. It also lets you jump and dash across the air. Be wary with how you use your 3DMG in the game, though, as it runs out of gas and needs blade replacements. The indicator at the bottom of the screen tells you how much gas and how many blades you still have. These resources can be replenished via box-like objects located across the map. It may be a bit confusing at first, but I think that’s the beauty of it. 3DMG’s weren’t meant to be easy to use anyway.

For a game with not-so-stellar graphics, it does a great job in the game controls department. There are different maps you can choose from including two training maps where you can kill off immobile titans or just collect boxes all over the map. If you want to get the hang of your 3DMG in-game first, you might want to visit the training maps first or you are going to spend the first few minutes getting eaten and decapitated by titans. There are also different camera settings you can try. You have original, WOW and TPS. The original setting allows you to move your mouse around without affecting character’s vision. The WOW setting uses the right click to rotate the camera while the TPS setting fixes your camera on your character. Another exciting thing to try with your friends is the LAN feature. There are four different maps to choose from, each with different goals and conditions. You can specify the maximum number of players, the difficulty, and the maximum time.
