If you’re an employee at Yahoo’s software development center in Bangalore, I’ve got some bad news for you: you might not have a job anymore. The American company is laying off hundreds of engineers at the Bangalore center as part of what it called “consolidation” in a statement issued to the press.
Just how many employees have been laid off isn’t yet clear. NextBigWhat initially reported that thousands were being laid off, but Quartz says 500, TechCrunch says 400, and The Hindu says it’s between 250 and 400 in one article, but pegs it at 700 in another. Yahoo itself hasn’t announced the number of jobs affected, but it seems likely to be at least a couple hundred. Depending on what the final tally is, this could be the company’s biggest layoff since 2012.
The Bangalore office, which employs about 2,000 people according to The Hindu, will remain open, though some of its R&D work is reportedly being shifted back to the United States. Some reports suggest that Bangalore’s top engineers have also been invited to continue their work for Yahoo at its US offices.
Update: Tech in Asia contacted Yahoo to ask about specific numbers, but the company offered only the following statement in response:
As we ensure that Yahoo is on a path of sustainable growth, we’re looking at ways to achieve greater efficiency, collaboration and innovation across our business. To this effect, we’re making some changes to the way we operate in Bangalore leading to consolidation of certain teams into fewer offices. Yahoo will continue to have a presence in India and Bangalore remains an important office.
