Lazada launches ChatGPT-powered chatbot

Ecommerce giant Lazada has launched an AI chatbot called LazzieChat, which is powered by ChatGPT in Azure OpenAI Service.

Users can access the chatbot by swiping down on the Lazada app homepage. LazzieChat can answer users’ shopping queries in a natural manner, as well as suggest relevant products or topics to users, Lazada said in a statement.

The chatbot can also look up item descriptions and link them to products available on the ecommerce platform.

CTO Howard Wang said the LazzieChat is part of Lazada’s efforts to build “a high quality digital ecosystem that is set up for long-term growth.”

LazzieChat is available in English in Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia, with the latter also receiving a Bahasa Indonesia version. More languages will be rolled out in the future.

In April, Lazada received a US$353 million injection from its parent firm, Alibaba Group. The move came after the Chinese tech titan announced plans to split its operations into six business units, which involved placing Lazada, AliExpress, Trendyol, and Daraz under the Global Digital Business Group.
