Sega announces Sonic Boom, a Sonic that actually looks good!

Sega is taking a leaf out of Nintendo’s book and making 2014 the year of Sonic. So what does the year of Sonic entail? For starts, we have a new Sonic game: Sonic Boom, a new TV show and a new range of Sonic based toys. I’m here for the games, so lets have a look at Sonic Boom’s first trailer:

This video gives me hope.

There appears to be four characters on screen most of the time, which suggests four player co-op mode. This makes me very happy indeed. If the game is half as fun as it looks, Sonic Boom will definitely be a game to play with friends.

What’s more, the characters look great (though Knuckles may have experimented with steroids) and the world design seems to have moved away from narrow, linear paths and moved towards large area exploration. Awesome!

We didn’t get to see much of the combat but it looks like both hand-to-hand combat and gunplay will be required, and most importantly; Tails looks badass with a laser. Knuckles can still do his punch-climb, Tails can still fly, Sonic can run, and Daisy… well I’m sure they’ll give her something useful to do as well.

Sonic Boom will most likely be launched for the Wii U and 3DS later this year, and will be the last Sonic game that will be exclusive for Nintendo. Let’s see if this marks the return of everyone’s favourite hedgehog!
