Sega announces new survival horror game Alien: Isolation

Fans of the Alien films haven’t always had a good time with the movies’ video-game tie-ins, and the latest effort — Sega’s Aliens: Colonial Marines — was by all accounts a disaster. But the Japanese publisher hasn’t given up on the Alien franchise yet, and today it announced a new game titled Alien: Isolation.

As the trailer suggests, this new game will apparently forgo the gunslinging action of previous titles and focus on subtler survival horror. The idea is that the game will look and feel more like Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror film Alien than James Cameron’s sci-fi action follow-up Aliens.

In Isolation, players will take control of Ripley’s daughter Amanda as she is stalked and hunted by a Xenomorph through a space station (and maybe some other locations too). As you can see in the trailer, she’s not equipped with much in the way of weaponry, although she does have the series’s signature motion detection device. The game isn’t about killing the alien — it apparently can’t be killed — it’s about avoiding it. Which isn’t easy considering that it doesn’t move on predetermined paths, and rather is programmed with senses like sight and hearing that it uses intelligently to hunt you.

The game will also feature other characters, including the four-person crew that Amanda traveled with, but there’s still a lot we don’t know about this title. As a fan of the film series, and especially the original Alien, I have to say that watching this trailer got me pretty excited for the game. Perhaps I shouldn’t be, but I can’t help it.

And thankfully, I won’t have to wait too long. The game will be released late this year for PC, PS4, and Xbox One as well as the PS3 and Xbox 360. Until then, IGN has a lengthy preview of the game you can check out here.
