SCOOP is an iPad app that allows users to download and read magazines via the iPad. Readers are spoilt for choice. There are over 200 magazines editions available for download (free and paid). One advantage as a SCOOP user is that the digital prices are usually cheaper than the printed ones.
The list of magazines includes Her World, Maxim, Men’s Fitness, FHM, Cosmogirl, Spice! and many more. These magazines are mainly editions from Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. More regional magazines will be available soon.
The statistics look good. Over 100,000 digital magazines have been downloaded since SCOOP was released 4 months ago. Willson Cuaca, who leads the SCOOP team, said, “over 7 million magazine pages have been read so far.”
For now, the content available on SCOOP remains similar as the printed version. The team is currently working on exclusive content that will benefit both publishers and readers.
“Revenue sharing is our business model. We are also looking to have featured magazine banner in the future. More business models are in the pipeline and we are building them now,” said Willson when asked on SCOOP’s business model.

Apps Foundry, an application development company, is the creator of SCOOP. It has 11 team members located in Indonesia and Singapore. Besides Willson, Dewi Goh, VP of Sales, who has experience in the publishing industry, is also a key figure within the team.
“In the near future, we will also help regional publishers develop monetization strategy. As printed magazine goes south, we believe our SCOOP platform can help publishers. We help by lowering publishers’ entry barrier to new digital platform, provide better content distribution channel and generate new revenue stream with little cost,” said Willson.
Willson used Rupert Murdoch’s ‘The Daily’ as an example to highlight that content is soon moving to digital platform. In fact, SCOOP is also experiencing the shift as more magazines join its platform. “With more magazines joining SCOOP, searching and discovery are some problems that we have to tackle too,” he said.
SCOOP seems to be taking the lead in Asia as content shifts from print to digital platform. It brings the magazine rack to your iPad. Try the app [free, iTunes link] and let us know your thoughts.
