In brief: LTA says Ryde’s express courier service is illegal

Transport regulator issues warning over RydeSend (Singapore). The city-state’s Land Transport Authority said that Ryde’s new express delivery service contravenes regulations that prohibit taxis and private-hire cars from conveying goods without passengers on board. Drivers that accept courier jobs may have their vocational licenses revoked, the agency added.

In response to questions about such rules, the ride-hailing startup’s CEO Terence Zou said at the launch of RydeSend yesterday that “legislation is behind the curve” and “there is no clear definition of what can or cannot be done,” pointing out that private-hire drivers regularly handle delivery-only jobs. The LTA said that Ryde had not consulted it prior to unveiling the service. (The Straits Times)
