With Bangkok Floods Ongoing, RIM Relocates Devcon Asia 2011

According to an e-mail sent out to the press, RIM (NASDAQ:RIMM) is officially relocating Blackberry Devcon Asia 2011. Thailand was supposed to be the place where RIM would hold the event, but as most of you now know, that nation is facing a terrible flood disaster in the capital of Bangkok.

Below is an excerpt from the notice sent out by RIM:

Due to the current high levels of flooding in Bangkok, Research In Motion (RIM) has decided BlackBerry DevCon Asia will not take place in Bangkok this year. The decision was made following advisories that warn of ongoing dangers related to the serious impact of rain and floods on the local infrastructure in Bangkok, where the conference was scheduled to take place. The safety of attendees at any BlackBerry event is of utmost importance to RIM.

The disaster has been going on for some time now, and RIM might have made its decision a little quicker than this. There are quite a few who have booked their flights and hotel rooms to attend the event, and this is another mess that RIM should have handled more quickly to get the best possible solution.

As RIM’s global brand is a shadow of its former self, focusing on Asia seems to be one of the best options available, particularly in Indonesia. As the new heartland of Blackberry-luvin’ in Asia, perhaps turning back to Jakarta as the city to hold the Developer Conference is the safest bet.
