Report: Bukalapak sued for $6.3m by Indonesian real estate developer

“One of Indonesia’s biggest ecommerce companies, Bukalapak, is being sued on charges of unlawful acts together with PT Leads Property Service Indonesia. Both (the companies) were sued by PT Harmas Jalesveva,” reported Indonesian news portal Detik Finance.

Details:

  • A lawsuit was registered at the South Jakarta District Court on March 24 by commercial real estate developer PT Harmas Jalesveva.
  • The developer had filed for 14 requests in the lawsuit, one of which seeks to make Bukalapak pay for losses of 90.3 billion Indonesian rupiah (US$6.3 million).
  • Bukalapak’s vice president of legal, public policy and regulatory affairs, Perdana Arning Saputro, responded saying that the company did not used PT Harmas Jalesveva’s services, and in fact it was the developer that still has obligations that need to be fulfilled. “For that, we affirm that we will make efforts to obtain our rights and carry out legal procedures in accordance with applicable legal corridors in Indonesia,” he added.

Context:

  • The lawsuit also requested the court to declare that Bukalapak and Leads Property Services Indonesia committed illegal acts. However, the Detik report doesn’t mention what the illegal acts were.
  • It also asked the court to confiscate 75% of Bukalapak’s shares and keep it as a collateral until a verdict is handed down.

Update (March 25, 2021 23:00pm SGT): This article was updated to include the response from Bukalapak’s legal team.
