“Disney is to close 18 TV channels in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong as the conglomerate puts a greater emphasis on direct-to-consumer streaming,” Variety reported.
Details:
- The global media titan will shut down the channels Fox, FX, Fox Action Movies, Fox Family Movies, Fox Movies, Star Movies China, Fox Sports, Disney Channel, and Disney Junior, among others.
- Disney has decided to close them to focus instead on its direct-to-consumer (D2C) streaming model. The move is set to take effect on October 1 this year.
Context:
- The only four channels that will remain in operation are Star Chinese Channel, Star Chinese Movies, National Geographic Channel, and Nat Geo Wild channel.
- Disney+ Hotstar, its video-streaming platform, is currently available in only two Southeast Asian countries: Singapore and Indonesia.
